1969 AND 1970 OBITUARIES

  

ASH, CORA MAUD (CURRIER), age 83, died November 23, 1969.  She was born in Plymouth on May 17, 1886, the daughter of Wilbur and Hattie (Foss) Currier.  Her grandfather was Salon Currier, a preacher, who drowned in 1882 crossing a lake in New York State.  Maud was the widow of Lorenzo G. Ash who died in 1942. She is survived by three daughters, Annie Ash, Sarah Grottan, and Jennie Smialek, as well as two stepsons, Herb Ash and Harold Ash.

 

BECKLEY, WILLARD H., died in 1969 and was buried in Riverside Cemetery.  He was born in Vermont on June 17, 1905, the son of Perley Beckley and Leila Williams.  He moved to Plymouth in 1929 and owned Beckley’s Garage in Lower Intervale.  He was married to Marion Beardslee.

 

BIXBY, VIVIAN (KENNESON), died in April of 1969 in Hanover.  She was born in Plymouth on July 28, 1902, the daughter of Delbert and Louise (Craig) Kenneson.  She married Ivan Bixby of Rumney and they had four sons, Leon, Bernard, Harold, and Merle, and three daughters, Mrs. Bernice Winsor, Mrs. Ila Keniston, and Mrs. Janice Hutt.  Vivian was buried in Highland Cemetery in Rumney.

 

BURTT, ELSIE M. (NICHOLAS), died December 16, 1969.  She was born in Newburyport, Massachusetts on July 6, 1890, the daughter of Adam and Louise Nicholas.  She married Arthur A. Burtt of Plymouth on June 10 1912 and they made their home on Pleasant Street.  They were married for 57 years.  She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Enid Senter.  She is buried at Trinity Cemetery.

 

CASS, HOWARD LUTHER, died June 30, 1969.  He was born in Ashland on March 31, 1885, the son of George and Mary Jane (Sanborn) Cass.  His father died in 1893 and the family then moved to Plymouth.  Howard is buried at Blair Cemetery.

 

EASTMAN, MISS M. ALICE, died at Speare Memorial Hospital on March 6, 1969.  She was born in Holderness on September 19, 1885, the daughter of Charles A. Eastman and Laura Ellen Perkins.  She worked at the D & M Factory until it closed in 1936.  Burial was at Green Grove Cemetery in Ashland.

 

FLAGG, HELEN (STANTON), died May 7, 1969.  She was born in 1888, the daughter of Andrew A. and Lucia (Cushing) Stanton.  Her husband, Randall A. Flagg, died in 1953.  She is buried in Riverside Cemetery.

 

FOSTER, GEORGE ALLEN, died December 20, 1969 and is buried in Riverside Cemetery.  He was born in Plymouth on March 28, 1907, the son of George Rice Foster and Christobel Allen.  He was a 1928 graduate of Dartmouth College and a graduate of the Eastman School of Music and the University of Rochester in New York.  He was the General Manager of the New Orleans Symphony from 1943 to 1953.  He was Music Director at Plymouth State College in 1950 and on the faculty at Plymouth High School for five years.  Called Allen by his family and friends, he was married to Mary Jeter and had a son, George Thaddeus Foster of Seattle, Washington.

 

GRIFFIN, LUCY (RAMSEY), died May 30, 1969.  She was born in Bethlehem on June 6, 1893, the daughter of Ulysses Hiram Ramsey and Esther Pilboro.  She came to Plymouth in 1901 from Concord and lived here until 1959.  She was married to Clayton Griffin, who died in 1967.  She is buried at Riverside Cemetery.

 

GREELEY, DONNA MAY (PALKEY), died at age 93 on October 29, 1970.  She is buried in Trinity Cemetery.  She was born June 1, 1877 in Bartlett, the daughter of John Greeley and Margaret McKenzie.  She was the widow of George H. Greeley, who died in 1940.

 

 

 

 

 

HALEY, HAROLD A., died June 5, 1970.  He was born in Laconia on June 29, 1893, the son of Jeremiah Haley and Angeletta King.  He was the second oldest of 12 children.  The family moved to Plymouth in 1898.  His brother, Richard “Bodie” Haley was killed in World War II and the Durant-Haley American Legion Post was named for him.  Harold married Clara Benjamin of Massachusetts, who died in 1955.  His second wife was Ola Bean, who died in 1968.  Burial for Harold was in Trinity Cemetery.

 

HARBERT, WILHELMINA (KENISTON), died at age 81 on September 23, 1970 in Stockton, California.  She was born in Plymouth, the daughter of John Keniston and Elizabeth Freeman.  She was one of six children and raised at the family home of Thurlow Street.  She had one daughter, Mrs. Nancy Ellsworth.

 

HENDERSON, BLANCHE AUGUSTA (GOULD), died January 7, 1970 in Minnesota.  She was brought back to Plymouth and buried at Trinity Cemetery.  Blanche was born in Plymouth on June 13, 1890, the second of five daughters of Charles J. Gould and Maria Morton.  Her father was a well-known Plymouth merchant, who brought his family to Plymouth in 1875.  Blanche was married to Reverend James Henderson who taught at Holderness school in the early 1900s.  They had a son, James Henderson, Jr.

 

HIGGINS, ALICE (DUSTIN), died February 1, 1970.  She was the daughter of James Dustin of Plymouth.  She had a brother, Wesley S. Dustin and a sister, Mrs. Beatrice Parker.

 

MC CARTHY, CONSTANCE E. (BALL), died March 17, 1970, St. Patrick’s Day at Speare Memorial Hospital.  She was buried at Riverside Cemetery.  Prior to her death she lived at 27 Russell Street in Plymouth.  She was born in Vermont on January 4, 1897, the daughter of Ernest Ball and Loretta Brown.  She married Charles McCarthy of Plymouth on May 21, 1932.  He died in 1962.

 

MERRILL, JOHN IRVING, died October 19, 1969.  He lived on Cooper Street in Plymouth.  He was born in Plymouth on September 30, 1911, the son of Leonard O. “Pete” Merrill and Grace Horne.  He married Dorothy Reinhart and had a son, Paul Merrill.  He was a carpenter by trade.  He leaves, in addition to his immediate family, a brother, Clayton Merrill of Plymouth.  Burial was in Riverside Cemetery.

 

MERRIED, CHESTER C., died March 9, 1970 at Speare Memorial Hospital.  He was born in Salisbury on August 8, 1907, the son of George E. Merried and Viola Evans.  He was known as “Chet” by his many friends.

 

MITCHELL, CARL ALBERT, died in Maine on July 22, 1969.  He was born in Campton Bog on March 18, 1875, the son of Samuel and Pamelia Hanson (Homans) Mitchell.  Carl was a building contractor.  He was married to Grace Russell, who died in 1959.  They had one son, Walter R. Mitchell of Massachusetts.  Carl, who was 94 when he died, had a brother, Senator Lester E. Mitchell of Campton.  Carl is buried at Riverside Cemetery.

 

MORSE, TOMMY, age 59, died July 27, 1969.  He was born in Plymouth on March 22, 1910 to Herbert and Minnie (Lang) Morse.  He worked on the B & M railroad and was married to Phyllis Sommers in Bristol on June 21, 1946.  He leaves a son, Alan M. Young, a daughter, Linda C. Morse, four sisters, Mrs. Cynthia Downing, Miss Bertha Morse, Mrs. Carrie Hardy, and Miss Mildred Morse.  Burial was in Riverside Cemetery.

 

PALMER, IDA BELLE (COLLINS), widow of Dr. Harold H. Palmer, died August 2, 1969 in Plymouth.  She is buried at Trinity Cemetery.  Ida was born on September 2, 1882 in Rumney, the daughter of Nathan and Josephine (Cayes) Collins.  Dr. Palmer died on March 11, 1969.  She is survived by one son, Harold Nathan Palmer, and one daughter, Mrs. Marjorie Harvey.

 

PALMER, DR. HAROLD HAVEN, age 86, died March 11, 1969.  He was a doctor in Plymouth for nearly 60 years.  He was born in Meredith on January 8, 1883, the son of Dr. Haven Palmer and Lucy Ellis.  The family moved to Plymouth when he was a baby and lived on South Main Street.  He attended Holderness School for Boys and graduate from Plymouth High School in 1903.  He attended medical school at the University of Maryland and Baltimore Medical College.  He was married to Ida Collins of Rumney on January 22, 1917.  Burial was in Trinity Cemetery.

 

 

 

PURCHASE, AILPHA (AVERY), October 10, 1896, the daughter of Herbert L. Avery and Elizabeth Chalmers.  In 1916 she married George A. Emerson.  She married William A. Purchase in 1958 and had a daughter, Faye Emerson.  She is also survived by her brother Howard Avery and her grandson Wayne E. Spencer.  Burial was in Fairview Cemetery in Salida, Colorado,.

 

SIMMONS, ELIZABETH (CAYES), died January 6, 1970 in Massachusetts General Hospital.  She was born in Plymouth on September 23, 1887, the daughter of Nathaniel Cayes and Marcia Ann Elkins.  Her daughters are Mrs. Thelma Suitor and Mrs. Ethel Kenneson.  She was buried in Highland Cemetery in Rumney.

 

SUTHERLAND, SAMUEL died August 21, 1969 in Plymouth.  He was born in Ellsworth on June 2, 1891, the son of Alexander J. and Calista Cross (Sherburn) Sutherland.  His father died in 1947 and his mother died in 1961.  He is buried at Riverside Cemetery.

 

TILTON, RAYMOND E., died November 7, 1970 at Speare Memorial Hospital.  Burial was in Riverside Cemetery.  He was born in Rumney on February 8, 1888, the son of Jesse J. Tilton and Martha Simpson.  He married Marion J. Foster, daughter of Edwin J. Foster.  She died on October 19, 1958.  There were no children born to Raymond and Marion.

 

THOMPSON, CHRISTIE (PAGE), died April 6, 1970 at Speare Memorial Hospital.  She was born in Campton on November 12, 1891, the daughter of Rueben Page and Flora Ames.  She married John Thompson in 1916.  He died in 1955.  They had a son, John W. Thompson.
