1960 TO 1963 OBITUARIES

 

ADAMS, ALICE E. (MIGNAULT), was born 9/7/1871 in New York to Frank and Emily (Gonyea) Mignault.  She was the widow of George F. Adams and the mother of Edward Adams.  She had lived in Plymouth for 60 years before her death in Meredith on 3/12/1960.

 

BAGLEY, LURA M. (HOMANS), died two days after her 94th birthday on 6/4/1960.  She was born 6/2/1867 to Arthur Homans and Mary Savage.  She married Charles f. Bagley on 1/10/1893 and they owned a meat market and grocery store on South Main Street.  Her husband died in 1945.  They had two sons, Arthur and Robert, and one daughter, Dorothy Carr, who resides in Maine.

 

BATCHELDER, MISS FRANCES died 11/1/1960.  She was born in Campton, the daughter of Smith and Emma (Mason) Batchelder.

 

BROWN, EARL S. died 3/10/1960.  He was born in Campton 12/28/1886, the son of Daniel C. and Emma (Sanborn) Brown.

 

BURTT, EMELIA (NICKLAS) died in February of 1960 at the home of her son, Robert.  She was born 2/23/1884 in Newburyport, Massachusetts, the daughter of Adam and Louise (Weidner) Nicklas.  She married Charles C. Burtt, who died in 1953.  They had three sons; Robert P. Burtt, C. Edward Burtt of Pascaguola, Mississippi, and Kenneth Burtt of Natick, Massachusetts.

 

BURTT, EVA LACINA (ISHAM) died 5/3/1960.  She was born in East Concord, Vermont 2/13/1865, the daughter of Aaron and Abigail (Willis) Isham.  She married Albert F. Burtt.  He died in 1927.  He was employed at the D & M factory.  Eva was the mother of Doris Conrad.  She was 95 years old at her death.

 

CALDON, GUY EDWARD died 2/22/1960.  He was born in Plymouth 9/24/1884, the son of George E. and Martha (Harris) Caldon.  He married Agnes Taylor in Tilton on 5/10/1916. They had two sons, Albert, who died in France during World War II, and Guy, Jr.  Agnes Caldon died in 1945.

 

CARPENTER, VERONA (DESELLE) died 10/29/1960.  She was born in Plymouth 2/2/1911 to Joseph Deselle and Tine Nutting.  She was married to Carlos Carpenter.  She had a son, Joseph Latuch.

 

CLAY, BESSIE (PIPER) died in 1960.  She was born in Meredith 9/25/1881 to John and Mary Jane (Clark) Piper.  She married Gordon M. Clay on 11/16/1904.  He died 5/20/1959.

 

COLBURN, LETTIE (WELLS) died at age 85 on 2/4/1960.  She was born in Wentworth on 12/2/1874 to Henry Wells and Mary Speare.  She married Job Colburn on 8/14/1894.  They lived in Plymouth since 1928.

 

CURRIER, CHARLES WILLARD died 12/27/1960.  He was born in Rumney 1/8/1901 to Ernest and Elsie (Bowlen) Currier.

 

EASTMAN, ROY L. died 12/13/1960.  He was born in Bristol on 4/20/1903, the son of Horace Weston Eastman and Grace MacIntosh.  The family moved to Plymouth in 1909 and lived in a home very close to the traffic circle.  Roy was still living in his ancestral home when he passed away.

 

EMERY, MATTIE (COBURN) died at age 85 on 7/22/1960.  She was born in Plymouth in 1875, the daughter of Brewster G. Coburn.

 

FLETCHER, JOSEPHINE HARRIET (CLEMENT) died 7/10/1960.  She was the widow of Sherman S. Fletcher and was born in Bridgewater on 2/20/1874, the daughter of David B. Clement and Ellen Mary Huckins.  Her husband died in 1941 and she continued to make her home on Bridgewater Hill.  She purchased a small house on Pearl Street in Plymouth where she would spend the winter months.

 

FOX, PERRY C. died at age 60 on 2/10/1960.  He was born 11/13/1899 in Thornton, the son of Milo Fox and Ethel Smith.  He was employed as a gardener.

 

HARDY, ERNEST BAXTER died 3/17/1960.  He was born in Rumney 12/29/1876 to Baxter Hardy and Martha Wyatt.  His wife died in 1951.  He graduated from Plymouth High School in 1894, and from the New Hampton Literary Institute in 1895.  He worked for several years at the Webster Russell store in Plymouth and was later employed for many years at the D & M factory.  He served as tax collector in Plymouth.

 

HARVEY, LAURA (CONNOR), was born in New Brunswick on 6/2/1869, the daughter of William H. and Mary Ann (Fallon) Connor.  She was the widow of Charles A. Harvey, who died in 1952.  She died in Meredith on 3/21/1960.

 

JONES, HERBERT E., was born in Ashland 9/16/1876 to Alphonse and Maria (Currier) Jones.  He died at Speare Hospital 5/19/1960.  He was the father of two sons, Russell Jones and Harold Jones.

 

MC BRIDE, VIOLET (DAVIS) died 11/24/1960.  She was born in Plymouth 4/29/1910 to Lester and Catherine (Knight) Davis.  She was married to Vincent McBride.

 

PLANT, DORIS LYSLE (AYER) died 2/1/1960.  She was born in Haverhill 12/15/1870 to Charles J. and Lillian (Cawley) Ayer.  The family moved to Plymouth in 1897, where Charles founded Ayer Insurance Agency.  Doris’ husband, Mr. Plant, died in 1949 in Brazil.  The couple lived in many foreign countries as he was a foreign sales representative of the U.S. Steel Company.

 

SARGENT, BENJAMIN P., was born in Holderness, the son of Marcus M. Sargent and Anne Pease. His birth date was 7/26/1875.  He died in Plymouth 3/16/1960.

 

SHERWOOD, SADIE (BABCOCK), the widow of Harry S. Sherwood, died 7/20/1960.  She was born in Vermont on 5/23/1890, the daughter of Joseph and Ella (Walker) Babcock.  Harry Sherwood died in October 1958.

BAYLEY, LURA M. (HOMANS) died 6/4/1961.  She was born 6/2/1867, the daughter of Arthur and Mary (Savage) Homans.  She married Charles F. Bayley on 1/10/1893.  Their home and grocery store was on South Main Street for many years in the house that is now the American Legion Hall.  Lura was 94 years old when she died.

 

BLAKE, EARL L. died 10/4/1961.  He was born in Warren 5/30/1890 to Oscar and Rosella (French) Blake.  He was married to Edith Greenlaw and they had four children; three sons and a daughter.

 

DESMARIS, PERSIS (MERRILL) died 8/20/1961.  She was born in Holderness 2/26/1895, the daughter of John Merrill and Mabel Richie.  She worked for the Draper Corporation at Beebe River and was the wife of Arthur Desmaris.

 

ELLISON, CHARLES H. died at the age of 76 on 9/4/1961.  He was born in Holderness on 9/17/1884 to John and Emma (Cushing) Ellison.  He was married to Lillian Joyce, who died in 1950.  He was employed at the D & M until 1936.

 

HARDY, HENRY RAYMOND died 10/2/1961.  He was born in Plymouth 2/16/1899 to Forrest and Alice (Harvey) Hardy.  He was married to Edna Elliott.

 

HARVEY, LAURA (CONNOR) died 3/2/1961.  She was born in New Brunswick 6/2/1869 to William H. and Mary Ann (Fallon) Connor.  She married Charles Austin Harvey, who died in 1952.  She was 91 years old when she died.

 

HOUSTON, GEORGE D. DIED AT AGE 73 ON 10/12/1961.  He was born in Vermont on 4/18/1888, the son of Charles Houston and Kate English.  He was married to Ellen Doran.

 

JACQUES, ORA E. died 3/11/1961.  He was born in Ashland 2.19.1896, the son of Theodore and Mary (Guyotte) Jacques.

 

JONES, HERBERT ELMER died 5/19/1961.  He was born in Ashland 9/16/1876, the son of Alphonse and Maria (Currier) Jones.

 

MORSE, EVA (LOVE) died in October 1961.  She was born in Canada on 3/31/1876 to John and Margaret (Barber) Love.  She was married to Alfonzo F. Morse.

 

SARGENT, BENJAMIN P. died 3/16/1961.  He was born in Holderness 7/26/1875 to Marcus M. and Anne (Pease) Sargent.  He was married to Della Jones.

 

SMITH, ALETHA (AMES) died 2/10/1961.  She was born 2/27/1872 in Bristol to Burley and Mary (Locke) Ames.  She married Nathan Smith of Bridgewater on 5/30/1888.  Their only child, Abbie was born at their home on Bridgewater Hill.  Abbie married Fred Cayes of Plymouth and died on 8/2/1959.

 

SUTHERLAND, CLISTA C. (SHERBURNE) died 2/28/1961.  She was born in Ellsworth 12/13/1869 to Samuel and Amanda (Willey) Sherburne.  She was married to Alexander J. Sutherland at the old Pemi Hotel in Plymouth on 1/20/1888.  Alex died in 1947.

 

TOBEY, SUSAN LUCRETIA (COLBY) died 11/17/1961.  She was born in Plymouth 5/27/1887, the daughter of Captain George Colby and Lulu Mitchell.  Her father was a Spanish-American War veteran.  He was the station master in Plymouth for many years.  She was a lifetime resident of Plymouth, with the exception of 16 years spent at the estate called “Lucknow,” now known as “Castle in the Clouds,” which her husband owned.  She married Fred C. Tobey and it was at the mansion that they celebrated their golden wedding anniversary.  In 1960 they purchased the George C. Clark estate in West Plymouth and transferred their stables of horses to that location.

 

WOOD, ALMON GEORGE died 2/18/1961.  He was born in Thornton 8/15/1887 the son of Elmer J. and Emma (Tourtillotte) Wood.  The family moved to Plymouth in 1895.  Almon was married to Chloe Brooks and was a veteran of World War I.

 

WORTHEN, GUY L. died 4/14/1961.  He was born 12/15/1891 in Holderness, the son of Warren Worthen and Mary Moulton.

 

WRIGHT, ALBERTA (BROWN) died at age 88 on 4/3/1961.  She was born in Bristol 12/13/1872, the daughter of Daniel and Frances (Marston) Brown.  The family moved to Plymouth in 1876.  She married Attorney Fred S. Wright on 3/2/1903.

 

 

(1962)

 

ADAMS, MARGUERITE (DRAPER) died 9/29/1962.  She was born in Plymouth 7/17/1889, the daughter of Jason Fletcher Draper and Harriet Cora Russell.  She graduated from Wellesley College with the class of 1911.  She was married to Walter B. Adams.

 

CAYES, FRED died 10/6/1962.  He was born in Plymouth 12/1/1885 to Nathaniel Cayes and Marcia Elkins.  He was one of 10 children born to them.  He married Abby Smith on 4/28/1917 and they had five children.  She died on 8/2/1959.  During their marriage they made their home on Broadway Street.  Fred was a carpenter-contractor by trade.

 

CLOUGH, EDWARD A. died in an automobile/train accident on 9/8/1962.  He was born in Rumney on 3/20/1891, the son of James Clough and Nellie Welch.

 

CONWAY, ELIZABETH (BAIRD) died 2/25/1962.  She was born in Canada 1/14/1875.

 

EMERSON, ELIZABETH (SPOKESFIELD) died 7/23/1962.  He was born 9/9/1905 in West Campton, the daughter of Charles E. and Josie (Hooper) Spokesfield.

 

HALL, DAVID F. died 7/4/1962.  A native of Rumney, he was born 7/29/1889 to George and Minnie (Emerson) Hall.  He was a retired conductor on the B & M railroad.  He and his wife, the former Estelle Packard had one son and four daughters

 

HUCKINS, ELMER E. died 9/25/1962.  He was born in Holderness 8/14/1879, the son of John Huckins and Sophia Caldon.  He was married to Pauline Marden..

 

HUTCHINS, NELSON K. DIED 1/19/1962.  He was born in Rumney 5/12/1880, the son of Joseph and Emeline (Elliott) Hutchins.  He was employed at Loveland’s Crutch Mill for many years.  He married Susan Goodwin, who died in 1957.

 

KENISTON, EVERETT ASA died 9/22/1962.  He was born in Plymouth in 1887, the son of John Keniston and Elizabeth Perry Freeman.  He married Martha Savage of Henniker on 6/29/1910, a long time schoolteacher at the Sargent School in Plymouth.  They were the parents of eight daughters.  Asa owned and operated a grocery store on South Main Street for many years.

 

NOYES, MRS. HERBERT W. died 9/5/1962.  She was born 6/4/1884 in Pouch Cove, St. Johns, Newfoundland, the daughter of William F. and Jemima (Gruchy) Ryan.  She came to the United States in 1898 and married Herbert Noyes in 1911.  They lived in the Bristol-Alexandria area for about 25 years and moved to Plymouth in 1934.  They had one son, William H. Noyes, and one daughter.

 

SHERBURN, MYRTIE M. (AVERY) died 5/19/1962.  She was born in Ellsworth on 10/7/1869 to Gordon K. and Mary (Batchelder) Avery.  She married Orrin W. Sherburn 10/7/1890.  She was 92 years old when she died.  Her husband died in 1938.

ADAMS, EVA (HILL) died at age 74 on 10/4/1963.  She was born in Holderness on 11/30/1888 to Horace and Lilla (Tucker) Hill.

 

AYER, PERCY M. died 2/18/1963.  He was born 11/2/1892 to Charles J. and Lillian E. (Cawley) Ayer.  He was the president of Ayer Insurance Agency in Plymouth.  He was married to Helen Savage.

 

FELLOWS, MARY (LESLIE) died 1/4/1963.  She was born in Vermont 3/14/1877 to Joseph and Marion (Graves) Leslie.  She married Victor M. Fellows in Plymouth on 3/27/1901.  Victor died in 1947.

 

FORBES, LEILA (WELLS) died 11/13/1963.  Born in Plymouth 11/26/1899, she was the daughter of Albert and Florence (Swain) Wells.  She lived in Bridgewater on the River Road for 31 years prior to her death.  She was the wife of Bertram L. Forbes.

 

HALL, CHARLES G. died 3/2/1963.  He was born in Holderness on 1/25/1908, the son of Perley C. Hall and Lida Eldora Smith.  He was married to the former Kathryn Taylor.

 

HARDY, EDNA E. (VINTON) died 4/17/1963.  She was born 5/10/1893, the daughter of John and Florence (MacIntosh) Vinton.  She was previously married to a Mr. Elliott.

 

KENISTON, DORA BELLE (BEAN) died 6/1/1963.  She was born in West Thornton 7/14/1880 to Augustus and Sarah (Nickerson) Bean.  The family moved to Plymouth when she was a child.  She married Charles W. Keniston of Plymouth, who was a tailor for 65 years.  He died in 1956.  They lived on Russell Street.

 

MERRILL, JAMES H.B. died 1/5/1963.  He was born in Holderness 1/7/1899 to John M. Merrill and Mabel Richie.  He was married to Gladys Whittemore.

 

MORSE, MINNIE E. (LANG) died at age 87 on 12/8/1963.  She was born in Ellsworth on 11/3/1876 to Hiram and Miranda Lang.  She had lived in Plymouth for the past 70 years.

 

RICHARDS, GUY C. died 4/2/1963.  He was born in Plymouth 4/18/1900, the son of Charles and Annie (MacDonald) Richards.  He worked for many years at the D & M.  He moved to Laconia in 1940, where he purchased Maher’s Book Store.  He was married to Marjorie S. Harriman.

 

TOBEY, FRED C. died at age 83 on 4/10/1963.  He was born in Plymouth 8/17/1879 and was well known throughout New England and was prominent in the lumbering business, real estate, establishment of motor courts, and raising and driving trotting horses.  He established Lucknow Stables in West Plymouth at the former George C. Clark estate.

 

WILLOUGHBY, FRANK P. died 6/4/1963.  He was born 7/3/1887 in Rumney, the son of Luther and Alice (Hardy) Willoughby.  He was a veteran of World War I and was married to Grace Battles.
