1945 TO 1949 OBITUARIES

 

 ALLEN, CHARLES WILLIAM, age 26, was killed in action 2/13/1945 somewhere in France.  He was the son of Burtram W. Allen and was born in Campton 9/3/1918.

 

Bayley, Charles Flanders DIED 10/20/1945.  born 11/14/1866, he was the son of Timothy and Susan (Cochran) Bayley.  He was associated with his brother in the firm of Bayley Brothers Meat and Provision Dealers.  They were also cattle buyers.  Their meat market was located in the Tufts Block, which burned in 1930.  He married Lura M. Homans on 1/10/1893 and they celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1943.  Two sons; Arthur and Robert.  Burial was in Riverside Cemetery.

 

BEARDSLEE, CHARLES FELLOWS died 2/26/1945 at his home.  He was born in the same house where he died on 1/17/1876.  He was the only son of Charles Beardslee and Ella Ferren.  He married Juliette Glines of Sandwich 1/17/1906.  They had one daughter, Marion, who was married to Willard Beckley.  Charles was a painter by trade.  Burial at Riverside Cemetery.

 

CLIFFORD, LURA (Sherburn) died 12/19/1945.  She was born in Ellsworth 12/14/1866 to Samuel and Amanda (Willey) Sherburn.  She was the mother of Chester Clifford.  Burial was in Riverside Cemetery.

 

CLOUGH, CHARLES died 3/13/1945.  He was born 3/31/1868 to Leonard P. and Cordelia (Bartlett) Clough in Ashland.  He was employed at the D & M factory.

 

DOLLOF, ANNIE (LANE) died 7/4/1945.  Born in Post Mills, Vermont on 8/10/1866, she was the daughter of Joseph and Mary Nellie (Lovering) Lane.  She graduated from Plymouth Normal School in 1887.

 

DUPONT, PHILIP GENE, injured on Okinawa from gunshot wounds of the back and chest, died 5/22/1945 from those wounds.  He was born in Boston 9/11/1925 to Philip and Anne Dupont and came to Plymouth when he was in the 6th grade.  He married Mary Durand and they had two children, Gene Philip, age 2 and Mary Ann, 4 months.

 

EASTMAN, FLORENCE (CLOUGH) died 8/14/1945.  She was the widow of John Eastman.  She was born in Holderness 3/6/1858 to Orrin and Thursa (Baker) Clough.  John Eastman died about 1925.

 

LOVETT, NELLIE M. (ANDREWS), widow of Lyman Lovett died 12/7/1945.  Born in Warner 8/5/1871, she was the daughter of Norris and Martha Jane (Cheney) Andrews.  Her husband died 3/17/1919.  Their oldest son, Lester Lovett, died 9/24/1918, while serving in the Armed Forces in World War I.  Her daughter, Alice, died at age three.

 

MITCHELL, HAROLD NEWTON died 4/22/1945 from wounds received in Germany.  He was born in Campton 6/25/1918 to Lester E. Mitchell.  He married Barbara Robertson of Thornton 10/4/1941.  They had a daughter, Dorothy May, 20 months old.

 

MORTON, RALPH F. died 9/11/1945.  Born in Vermont 1/2/1892 he was the son of Frederick and Lelia (Smith) Morton.  He was a musician of some renown and was married to Mrs. Margaret (Burleigh) Titus on 9/1/1920.  She was the daughter of attorney Alvin Burleigh.  Their marriage took place on the summit of Mt. Washington.

 

O’SHEA, JOHN J. died of a heart attack at the railroad station in March of 1945.  Known as “Jack”, he was born in Plymouth 7/30/1886 to James O’Shea and Ellen Bailey.  He was employed by the B & M railroad.  He was married to Mary, his second wife and had twin sons from his first marriage; John J. and Fred G.

 

RANDOLPH, WILLIAM J. died 10/16/1945.  He was born in England and married Lizzie A. Bayley of Plymouth 11/30/1885.  She died 12/28/1942.  Burial was in Riverside Cemetery.

 

ROGERS, CLARA M. (BELL) died 3/6/1945.  She was born in Vermont 12/27/1857 to Joseph L. and Minerva (Thomas) Bell.  In 1880 she married Mayo H. Thompson of Lisbon and they had two sons; Max A. who died in 1939 and Harold A.  She married again on 9/7/1899 to Henry W. Rogers.  She worked as a milliner for Mrs. Pressey.  Burial was in Trinity Churchyard.

 

SPEARE, GUY EDWIN died 10/23/1945 at his home on High Street in Plymouth.  He was a member of the Plymouth Teachers College faculty for 24 years.  Born in Vermont 8/15/1875, he was married to Eva A. Clough of Groton, Vermont, in 1903.  He was good friends with Dr. Ernest Silver, President of the Teachers College and Mr. George C. Clark of Plymouth.

 

WEBSTER, CHARLOTTE (WHITE) died 12/14/1945.  She was born in Concord 7/21/1889 to Nathaniel and Helen (Eastman) White.  She was 56 years old when she died.

 

WILKINS, SUSIE MAE (HALEY) died 6/5/1945.  Known as “mother,” Wilkins was born in Brunswick, Maine on 8/18/1872 to Jacob and Lydia (Brown) Haley.  She married Joseph Frederick Wilkins 6/3/1891 and they moved to Plymouth in 1909.  He died 1/9/1932.  She was the mother of “Tige” Wilkins, and Doris Wherland.  Burial was in Riverside Cemetery.

 

WILLIS, FREEMAN C., age 91, died at his home on Russell Street in 1945.  Born in Lancaster 9/20/1853 to Cyrus Willis and Sarah Gotham, he was at one time a hotel proprietor.  His father owned a stage line in Littleton for many years.  His mother was a fine horsewoman.  “Free” married Elizabeth Chase, daughter of Frank Chase.  She died in 1885.  In 1910 he married Edna Williamson, who died in 1941.

BAKER, VIRGINIA MAE, age 13, was killed in a train/car wreck at the Loon Lake crossing.  She was the daughter of Fred Baker of West Plymouth.  Burial was at Riverside Cemetery.

 

BATCHELDER, SUSIE (PIPER) died 8/20/1946.  Born 8/9/1879 to George R. and Addie (Tibbetts) Piper of Holderness, she was first married to Henry Hall of Holderness.  He passed away in 1929.  In 1931 she married James R. Batchelder.  She had no children.

 

CAYES, ARNOLD P. DIED IN AN AUTOMOBILE ACCIDENT 2/23/1946.  He had survived almost six years of military service during World War II.  He was married to Ruby Burnham of Bristol and they had a two month old daughter, Joan Aletea.  Arnold was born in Plymouth 9/21/1921, the son of Fred Cayes.

 

COOK, JOHN HOWARD died 2/23/1946.  He was the sixth child of Alfred and Hannah (Boynton) Cook.  He was born on his father’s Plymouth farm 5/20/1877 and graduated high school at the young age of 15.

 

COOLEY, LEON A. died 5/1/1946 of coronary thrombosis.  Born in Ashland 4/14/1894 he was the son of Almon W. Cooley and Mae Horner.  He married Bessie M. Towle 6/14/1916.

 

CORLISS, JEPTHER K. died 2/2/1946.  He was born in Hill 4/22/1862 to George and Mary Corliss.  His parents died during his infancy and he was raised by his grandmother at the old farm in Hill.  He was a retired engineer on the B & M railroad.  On 10/19/1886 he married Nellie Roby of Plymouth, daughter of George and Mary (Sargent) Roby.

 

CURRIER, ERNEST E. died 9/5/1946.  He was born 2/15/1878, the only son of Willard P. and Anna (Colby) Currier.  They both died when he was only two years old.  He made his home with his uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Parsons of Rumney.  He married Alice A. Bowlen of Prince Edward Island 10/12/1898.  They moved to Plymouth in 1901.  He was employed at the Foster Peg Mill.  Alice and Ernie had seven children; a daughter, Lena, died in October 1944, and Millicent, another daughter, died in March 1946.  He leaves five other of his children; Charles W., Ernest E., and Preston B., Mrs. Marion Pillsbury and Mrs. Hazel Lunroth.  Burial was in Riverside Cemetery.

 

DODGE, MURIEL (BROWN) died 3/13/1946.  She was born in Plymouth 10/9/1904 to J. Mellen and Bessie (Walker) Brown.  She married Alfred Lakschewitz 12/23/1922 and they had three sons, one of whom died in infancy.  Burial was in Riverside Cemetery.

 

HANSCOMB, CHARLOTTE (HAZELTON) died 4/24/1946 at her home on Texas Road.  Born in Plymouth 10/24/1896, she was the daughter of Daniel W. and Susan (Downing) Hazelton.  Her first marriage was to John Lougee and they had four sons; Shirley, John, Harold, and Charles Stephen.  Her second marriage was to Walter Hanscomb and they had one daughter and five sons; Viola, Elwin, twin sons, Walter Jr., William, Francis and George Edward.  Baby George died in infancy.

 

HUCKINS, EVA (CARR) died 10/6/1946.  She was born in Holderness 5/17/1877 to Gilman M. and Cora J. (Huntress) Carr.  She married Ned G. Huckins 2/3/1897.  He passed away in January 1942.

 

PIPER, R. TOLFORD died 5/14/1946.  Born 6/13/1890to Frank L. and Mary B. (Durham) Piper, he graduated from Plymouth High School in 1908.  He worked for A.F. Burtt and was married 10/25/1916 to Frances Patricia Messick.

 

WRENN, MILLICENT (CURRIER) died 3/29/1946 of acute leukemia.  Born in Plymouth 12/24/1915, she was the daughter of Ernest E. and Alice A. (Bowlan) Currier.  She had two brothers, Ernest and Preston.  She married Donald Wrenn 2/15/1942 and they had two little girls; Donna Carol and Sharon Ann.

APPLEYARD, ALFRED HENRY died 10/28/1947.  He was born in Lowell, Massachusetts 9/27/1871 to Richard and Eliza Ann (Dow) Appleyard.  He was employed at the D & M factory from when it was located in Ashland until it went out of business in Plymouth in the 1930s.  He is buried in Trinity Churchyard.

 

DURGIN, MARY ELLEN (FOSS) died 11/17/1947.  She was born in Thornton 9/30/1867 to Stephen and Judith (Morrill) Foss.  She married Varnum G. Durgin 5/3/1888.  Burial was in Riverside Cemetery.

 

EASTMAN, SIMEON DEXTER died at age 86 in 1947. He was born 10/7/1862 to Simeon and Lavinia A. (Webber) Eastman.  He was the seventh of nine children born to the couple. His first wife was Ella Hill.  Ila Smith was his second wife and they resided in Ashland.  At one time, he was a steamboat engineer, probably before going to work at the D & M factory.

 

FELLOWS, VICTOR M. died 12/11/1947.  He was born in Campton 1/16/1874 to Chauncey Ayer and Jennie (Lyford) Fellows.  When he was two years old the family moved to Plymouth.  On 3/27/1901 he married Mary Leslie and they had a daughter and a son, both of whom died in infancy.  Victor is buried in Trinity Churchyard.

 

SEAVEY, LILLIAN (HEATH) CHASE died 11/12/1947 of a cerebral hemorrhage.  She was born in Ashland on 8/15/1874 to Frank Pike Heath and Rhoda Ford.  In 1915 she married Warren G. Chase, co-owner of Chase Brothers Lumber Company.  They had a son, Anthony Brown Chase. Warren Chase died in 1908.  In 1912 she married Sidney Seavey of Barrington. He passed away in 1936.  Lillian was buried in Blair Cemetery.

 

SUTHERLAND, ALEXANDER J. died 11/3/1947.  He was born in Nova Scotia 1/9/1865 to James Sutherland and Christie McKay.  He came to New Hampshire from Boston when he was twenty years old and worked for the Chase Brothers Lumber Company in Ellsworth.  He married Calista Sherburn 1/22/1888.  Burial was in Riverside Cemetery.
