ADAMS, SARAH KATHERINE (SMITH), was born 9/21/1850 to
John and Sarah Jane (Badger) Smith. She
died in February of 1940. She was
married 6/14/1877 to the Honorable George H. Adams, who died in 1911.
During their marriage they lived on Merrill Street.
Burial at Trinity Churchyard.
ADAMS, GEORGE FRANCIS, died 5/19/1940 of pneumonia.
He was born in Plymouth 12/18/1864 to Romenia Coolidge Wells and William
Henry Adams. He was married to Alice Ella Mignault of Nashua and lived in
the south of Plymouth, where he farmed. He
was buried in the Turnpike Cemetery. He and his wife were the parents of three
children.
AHERN, LAWRENCE W., died in February 1940 in an
automobile accident. He was
employed by Nissen Baking Company and was enroute to Haverhill when he was
killed. He was born in Plymouth
12/4/1915, the oldest son of Stephen Ahern.
In 1935 he graduated from Plymouth High School.
Lawrence lived in Lower Intervale.
BOWLES, DR. GEORGE HALL, died 1/19/1940.
He was born in Lakeport 5/22/1860 to Charles Henry and Mary Ann (Batchelder)
Bowles. He graduated from Dartmouth
College in 1884 and Harvard Medical School in 1893.
He practiced medicine in Boston for 20 years, before coming to Plymouth
in 1912. He married Carolyn Blount 6/23/1893; she was from Colorado.
The couple lived on Highland Street with their two sons, Dr. Charles H.
Bowles and Dr. George E. Bowles.
BRAGG, OSCAR HUNT, died 2/6/1940.
He was born in Plymouth 1/1/1917 to Lester and Elsie Mae (Hunt) Bragg.
He was the grandson of Mrs. Oscar Bragg.

DRAPER, WILLIAM AUGUSTA, died 11/25/1940.
He was born in Rumney 3/25/1903 and married Lena A. Romprey on 6/30/1929.
He was employed by New England T & T Company.

DUFFY, MARGUERITE, daughter of Pearl Batchelder and
Glenwood Duffy, died of blood poisoning in her face in 1940.
She was born in Plymouth 7/15/1923 and lived with her aunt, Mrs. Lizzie

MUDGETT, MARY LOUISE, died 7/7/1940 at age 68.
She was born 2/8/1872 to John H. and Mary E. (Walker) Mudgett.
She graduated Wellesley College and taught for more than 40 years in New
Hampshire and Massachusetts. She
retired from teaching in 1929. Burial
was at Trinity Churchyard.
SMITH, IDA MAY (CAYES), died of a heart attack
2/11/1940. Born in Plymouth
2/4/1876, she was the daughter of Nathaniel and Marcia Ann (Elkins) Cayes.
She married Frank H. Smith 8/20/1895 and they lived on Huckins Hill on
the Reservoir Road. She is buried at Riverside Cemetery.
WESCOTT, RALPH, died in 1940. He was born 1/31/1904 to Herbert and Edith (Tyrell) Wescott
in Canaan. He attended Plymouth
schools. He was not married.

He was born 12/21/1885 and had a wife, Eva, and a son, Earl.

BLAISDELL, JUDSON A., died at his home on Beech Hill
11/6/1941. He was born 1/16/1852 in
Campton to Daniel and Elizabeth (Avery) Blaisdell. He had two sons, J.A. Blaisdell, Jr., and Daniel.
He is buried in Blair Cemetery.
FOSIE, ALFRED ALEXANDER, died 11/17/1941.
Born 9/30/1874 in Suncook, he was the son of Hubert and Zoë (Stone).
At age 21 he went to work for the B & M railroad, and retired after
44 years. He married Emma M. Cayes
3/21/1896 and they had three sons, Alfred A., Jr., Albert J., and Herbert.
They also had five daughters. Burial
was in Riverside Cemetery.
GREELEY, GEORGE HENRY, died 12/22/1941.
He was born in Thornton 11/3/1872 to Merrill and Elizabeth (Merrill)
Greeley. He was an RFD carrier in
Plymouth for about 30 years. He
married Donna M. Palkey of Plymouth 6/9/1897.

KIMBALL, ADDIE, died 3/9/1941. Born in Rumney 6/26/1877, she was the Rumney historian and
for many years at D & M.
PERSONS, HERMAN GEORGE, died in October 1941.
He was born in Plymouth 12/10/1899 to George M. and Clara A. (Downing)
Persons. He was in the Plymouth
High class of 1909. He married
Helen F. Bettis of Tilton 9/1/1917 and they had three sons; Herbert George,
Richard Adams, and Roger Edward. He is also survived by his mother, Mrs. Clara A. Person, a
brother, Sherburn and a sister. Burial
was in Blair Cemetery.
SMITH, NATHAN P., died 10/8/1941.
He was born in Bridgewater 7/5/1863 to Phineas B. and Sophronia (Covell)
Smith. He farmed in Bridgewater until 1892 when he moved to Bristol.
He was a brother to Charles H. Smith and he had a daughter, Mrs. Fred
Cayes. He is buried in Bristol.
SWEENEY, WILLIAM M., died in 1941.
He was born 7/14/1867 to Miles M. and Ellen (Sheehan) Sweeney.
He worked in the office at the D & M factory and later became one of
the buyers for the company. His
employment there lasted about 35 years. From
1912 until 1941 he was the Town Treasurer.
He is buried in Ashland.
TAYLOR, JOHN ZACHARY, died 9/9/1941.
He was born in Dorchester 10/12/1899 the son of Zachary Taylor and
married Thelma Nichols with whom he had a daughter, Grace Blaine.
THOMPSON, MURRAY H., died in April of 1941.
He was born in Melrose, Massachusetts in 1884 and came to New Hampshire
in 1900, buying a farm in Campton. In
1901 he went to work on the farm of Albert L. Merrill in Quincy.
In 1903 he went into partnership with Merrill and also married Jennie E.
Merrill. She preceded him in death.
He had two sons, Robert L. and David W., and three daughters, Mrs. Gladys
Francis, Mrs. Ruth Adams of Plymouth, and Mrs. Barbara Barnard.
He also leaves a brother, John Thompson of Plymouth.
VAN HOUSEN, MABEL (MORSE), died 4/2/1941 at her home on
Highland Street. She was born in
West Campton 6/18/1869 to Josiah H. and Ruth J. (Annis) Morse.
She married William P. Van Housen of Pennsylvania on 10/26/1886.
He was a bridge builder and he died in 1921.
She had two daughters, Wilhelmina Edsell and Miss Anna Van Housen.
Burial was in Pine Grove Cemetery in Thornton.
WHEELER, EMMA (GREENWOOD), born in Vermont 6/10/1875 to
Jerry and Selina Greenwood, she died in November 1941.
She married William Wheeler in September 1896 and they had three sons,
Harry, William, and Roy, and two daughters, Mrs. Lorenzo Dion and Mrs. Edward
Harvey. The family lived in the
Lower Intervale. Burial was at Trinity Churchyard.
YEATON, EMMA (ELLIOTT) died 12/4/1941.
Born in Rumney 5/2/1858 she was the daughter of George and Lydia
(Moulton) Elliott. She married
Joseph Hutchins in 1873. He died in
1901. She married George W. Yeaton
in 1911 and they lived on Ward Hill in Plymouth.
She was the mother of three sons and five daughters.
Burial was in Rumney.

ASH, LORENZO G. of Cooper Street died 11/14/1942.
Born in Bethlehem 6/9/1877, he was the son of Phineas and Elizabeth Ash.
He moved to Plymouth about 1912 and married Mrs. Maud King in December of
1916. Two sons, Harold and Herbert
and one daughter, Jennie Smialek.
BROWN, FRED WALLACE died in November 1942.
He was born in Vermont 4/27/1873 to Henry and Mary (Willard) Brown.
He came to Plymouth in 1890. His
first wife was Alice Cornelia McCoy on 12/27/1898.
She died in 1904. He then
married Mrs. Mary Bigelow Burleigh of Sandwich on 7/7/1908.
She died in September of 1939. His
sister, Miss Anna M. Brown, lived with Fred and he had a brother, Frank E.
Brown.
COOK CHARLES A., died in February 1942.
Born in Campton 11/9/1862 he was the son of Wellman Cook and Mary
Blaisdell. He worked for Chase and
Veazey Lumber Company of Laconia for 58 years.
He married Mary Carter of Thornton and she preceded him in death by 25
years. Burial at Riverside
Cemetery.
DALTON, MISS CORA A. died 8/26/1942.
She was born at the Dalton homestead atop Bridgewater Hill to Albion B.
Dalton and Emily Mitchell. She was
a well known photographer along with her sister, Anna A. Dalton.
She is buried in the cemetery at the foot of Bridgewater Hill.
DAVIS, MINA (WHITCHER) died 8/8/1942.
She was born in Dorchester 1/21/1880 to Emri and Lydia Whitcher.
She married William R. Davis 10/31/1898.
He died in 1935. Survived by
her daughter, Mrs. Stuart Currier. Burial
at Trinity Churchyard.
DAY, HENRY ALVIN died 8/12/1942.
He was born in Vermont 9/25/1894 to Leston E. Day and Mabel Sanborn.
He came to this area as an infant. He
is a World War I veteran and married Gladys Hutchins of Plymouth in 1925.
Two sons; Donald and Arnold and two daughters, Geraldine and Betty.
Henry is buried at Arlington National Cemetery.
DOWNING, MAUD E. (TOURTELLOTTE), died 1/21/1942.
She was born 10/27/1871 to Orin A. and Almedia (Emery) Tourtelliotte.
She married Fred Downing 5/4/1889 and had three children; Eva, who died
in 1926, Harry, who died in 1912, and Hazel.
Burial was in Riverside Cemetery.
EASTMAN, ALICE (LEATHE) died in August 1942.
She was born 2/10/1865 in Reading, Massachusetts to William and Charlotte
(Small) Leathe. She married Edwin
H. Eastman in 1920 and he died about two years ago.

GREEN, EDWARD, died 2/17/1942. He was born 5/21/1860 in South Acworth, the son of Edwin
Green and Anna Milliken. He married
Carrie B. Sanborn of Ellsworth in 1894. Burial

HALEY, RICHARD M., was killed in action 5/25/1942.
He was born in Plymouth 8/19/1914 to Henry Haley and Lettie King.
HEATH, H. BART, died in March of 1942.
He was born in Vermont on 8/16/1860 to Montgomery Heath and Victoria
Carpenter. He was foreman of the
“Plymouth Record” office for 27 years.
He married Lucy K. Oakes of Easton 12/11/1880.
She died several years before him. He
is buried in Lisbon.
HODSDON, HAROLD H., age 31, died 8/27/1942, a suicide.
He was born in Plymouth 12/31/1910 to Charles Hodsdon.
He married Harriett Austin of Keene and had a son, Harold, Jr.
HUCKINS, NED GORDON, died 1/5/1942.
He was born in Concord 7/27/1894 to Caleb and Lucretia (Young) Huckins.
For 47 years he was employed at the D & M factory. He married in 1897, Eva Carr of Holderness.
He is buried in Ashland.
JOHNSON, FRANK M., died in June of 1942.
He was born in Bristol 5/12/1862 to Melvin and Maria (Elliott) Johnson.
On 3/22/1891 he married Elsie Rowen of Bristol.
He worked for the B & M railroad.
One son, Ernest, and one daughter, Mrs. Hattie Smith.

JOHNSON, MARY ANN (BAYLEY), died 1/28/1942.
Born in Plymouth 4/23/1857 she was the daughter of Timothy Eastman Bayley
and Susan Cochran. She was the oldest of six children and was born on the Bayley
farm on the Reservoir Road. She
married Perley M. Johnson 8/5/1876. He
was a blacksmith in Holderness. He
died in 1921. They had a son, Harry
P. Johnson. Burial at Riverside
Cemetery.
KENNESON, RUSSELL F., son of Guy Kenneson of Rumney died
7/7/1942 in a PO.W.camp in the Philippines.
For a time, he was listed as missing in action.
KENISTON, WENDELL CYRUS drowned in Sebec Lake, Maine
8/27/1942. He was the youngest son
of John Keniston and Elizabeth Freeman. He
was born in Plymouth 9/29/1907 and married Helen C. Rose of Stockton, California
on 11/26/1932. They had a daughter,
Jean Elizabeth, born 7/9/1940. He
was involved in surveying with his brother, Carl.
For the past three months he was employed as a topographical engineer for
the U.S. Geological Survey and was located at Sebec, Maine.

MAYNARD, HENRIETTA FLORENCE (DRAPER), died 2/5/1942.
She was born 12/10/1854 to Nathaniel and Emma (Bridgeman) Draper in
Plymouth. She married John F.
Maynard in 1881. The Draper &
Maynard Company was founded by her brother, Jason F. Draper and her husband,
John Maynard. Two children; a son,
John Edward Maynard and a daughter, Mrs. John Denman, Jr.

POTTER, FRANCIS CALVIN was killed in action 9/14/1942 in
the South Pacific. He was 21 years
old and the son of Edward S. Potter.
RAMSEY, ULYSSES HIRAM died 11/1/1942.
His wife, Esther, died five years previous, to the day.
He was born in Piermont 2/22/1868 to Lyman Ramsey and Mary Cochran.
He moved to Plymouth in 1900 and was the superintendent of Plymouth’s
14 cemeteries. Survivors include
two daughters, Mrs. Lucy Dunclee and Esther Allen.

SAWYER, WALTER MONTGOMERY died 6.27.1942.
Born 7/2/1880, the son of Nahum and Octa (Thompson) Sawyer, he was born
in Enfield. He came to Plymouth in
1902. On 10/7/1908 he married Miss
Lyle Fellows, daughter of Chauncey A. Fellows.

SULLIVAN, JOSEPH DODGE, died in June of 1942.
Born in Plymouth 7/25/1871 the son of Owen Sullivan. On 3/31/1905 he
married Katherine Houghton of County Donegal, Ireland.
He was engaged in the trucking business for 27 years.

WELLS, FRED S., died 1/15/1942. Born in Wentworth 10/17/1869 he was the son of Henry Page
Wells and Mary Speare. He married
Myrtie Hills of P.Q. 11/3/1897. He
worked at the D & M factory and also had his own grocery store for many
years. He is buried in West Rumney.

Born in Plymouth 4/12/1890 to George H. Adams and S. Katherine Adams, he
worked for the D & M for 25 years. In
1915 he married Inez Margaret Perkins of Salem, Massachusetts.

AYER, LILLIAN E. (CAWLEY) died in May of 1943.
She was born in Haverhill 1/2/1858 to Chase Sanborn and Polly Fairbanks
(Morse) Cawley. She married Charles
J. Ayer 9/23/1888. He founded Ayer
Insurance Company and died several years ago.

BROWN, FRANCES (MARSTON) died 7/23/1943.
She was 96 years old and was born in New Hampton 1/30/1847 to John B. and
Eliza (Dow) Marston. She married Daniel M. Brown of Bridgewater and he died in
1932. Two daughters; Miss Margaret Brown and Mrs. Fred Wright of Woodsville.

He was born in Plymouth 7/5/1894 to Charles S. Dexter and Laura Fosie.
He worked on the B & M railroad for many years.

DONAGY, HENRY JOHN was killed in action 6/13/1943.
He was the son of John J. Donagy and was born in Plymouth 3/16/1920.
His mother was Julia Amadon. He
was engaged to be married to Miss Dorice Muzzy of Wentworth.
He had a twin sister, Marie Donagy and a younger sister, Louise.
EMO, CHRISTINE A. (ELLIOTT) died 4/13/1943.
Born in Plymouth 8/3/1904, she was the daughter of Walter S. Elliott.
She married Fred W. Emo 6/24/1925 and they had a son, Donald W. Emo.

Nudd. He worked for the B & M
railroad from the time he was 18. He
married Eliza Gore 9/1/1901 and had three daughters; Mrs. Walter E. Bowman, Jr.,
Mrs. E.P.A. Simpson of Florida, and Miss Alice Foster of Plymouth. Burial at
Riverside Cemetery.
GOVE, FRANK B. died 8/9/1943. Born 12/28/1870 in Boscowen, he was the son of Charles Gove
and Annie Shepard. He married
Margaret Cass of Plymouth and was employed at the D & M factory.
Two daughters; Mrs. Ethel Ladd and Miss Stella Gove.

PACKARD, HENRY HILTON died of dysentery 6/16/1943 in a
Japanese P.O.W. camp. He was born
in Plymouth 6/12/1908 to Fred Packard and Sadie Babcock. His mother later remarried to Harry Sherwood.

She was born in Iowa to David and Henrietta (Smith) Ames on 1/14/1874.
She married Reuben Page of Campton and he died in 1918.

Edna Willoughby. She married George M. Persons 3/2/1884. They had a son, Sherburne A. Persons and a daughter, Mrs.

PHILBRICK, AURA M. (WAKEFIELD) died at her home on
Reservoir Road in February 1943. She
was born in Ellsworth, Maine 1/31/1858 to Oliver Wakefield and Elizabeth
Robertson. She married Adin
Philbrick 12/31/1875. He was
Plymouth’s first rural mail carrier. He
died years ago. They had five
children; Walter D., Wilbur H., Sylvia A., Leslie W., and Alice H.

RANDOLPH, ELIZABETH A. (BAYLEY) died in January 1943.
She was born in Plymouth 6/18/1861 to Timothy Eastman Bayley and Susan

SPENCER, LOUIS A. died 9/15/1943.
Born in West Plymouth 9/13/1867 in the same house where he died, he was
the son of Silas M. Spencer and Lydia Heath.
He married Mabel McQuesten 11/6/1895, the daughter of Charles O.
McQuesten. Burial in Pleasant

STUHLMANN, ROBERT was killed in action in North Africa
11/19/1943. He was born in Ontario,
California in October 1921. He was
married 11/14/1942 to Phyllis E. Chubbuck of Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts.
One child, a son, Robert Jr.
TUPPER, BERTHA (COBURN) died 12/12/1943 from burns
received in a fire at her home in Lower Intervale. She was born in Plymouth 5/18/1882 to Brewster and Lettie
(Eastman) Coburn. In 1913 she
married George Tupper. Her sister
is Mrs. Ernest Emery.
WOOD, CHARLES ALFRED died 11/21/1943.
He was born in Lincoln 5/14/1893 to John and Elizabeth (Stonehouse) Wood.

10/22/1921 to Mr. and Mrs. Edgar C. Bowles.
He was with a tank battalion. He
was married to the former Doris McGhey of Santa Ana, Texas.
CARROLL, LEROY L. died 8/9/1944.
He was born in Old Town, Maine 6/29/1873 to Leslie and Elnora (Wilkinson)
Carroll. He married Josie Babcock
8/30/1894 and moved to Plymouth in 1905. Burial
was at Riverside Cemetery.
CLIFFORD, GEORGE KENNETH, son of Chester B. Clifford was
killed in action 3/27/1944. His
submarine, The Tullibee, was sunk while trailing a Japanese convoy.
DEACHMAN, W. JOHN, JR., a veteran of World War I, died
somewhere in the Pacific on 8/12/1944. He
was born in New York on 12/13/1897 to William J. Deachman.
He worked at the Parker-Young Company in Lincoln and was married to H.
Annie Griffin. They married on
5/18/192 and had four children; William J. Deachman, Virginia, Priscilla, and
Ross.
DOWNING, FRED W. died 3/4/1944. Born in Ellsworth 5/5/1860 he was the son of Moses N. Downing
and Betsey Willey. He married Maude
E. Tourtellotte 5/4/1889. She died
1/21/1942. Their son, Harry,
drowned in 1912. Fred operated a
shoe and harness repair shop and was also a millwright for the Chase brothers.
His repair shop was in a building which was later torn down, next to the
Plym6outh Inn. He then moved into the basement of the Highland Lodge.

EMERY, MARTIN LUTHER died 8/5/1944.
He was born in Vermont 11/14/1856 to George and Mary (Carter) Emery.
He had four children and was married twice.
He was the Plymouth Chief of Police for a few years.

FORD, WILLIAM T., age 77, died 7/19/1944.
He was born in Plymouth 12/13/1866 to Henry and Flora (Fellows) Ford.
He was buried in Rumney.
FOSTER, GEORGE R. died 11/7/1944.
He was born in Somersworth 5/11/1869 to Jacob R. Foster and Georgiana
Nash. He was married to Christabel
Allen of Littleton and they had one son, George Allen Foster.

HALL, ROBERT J., age 20, only son of Wilbur J. Hall and
Ethel Stewart of Rumney was killed in action in Germany 11/22/1944.
He was born at Stinson Lake on 11/6/1924 and graduated from Plymouth High
School with the class of 1943. He
leaves, in addition to his father one sister, Patricia Ann. He is buried in
Rumney.
HANLEY, FRANK BROOKS died 7/24/1944.
He was born in Dorchester to John T. Hanley and Mary Brooks on 4/16/1899.
He married Mildred Brogan on 5/26/1928.
He is buried in Pleasant View Cemetery Annex.
HARDY, RAYMOND HENRY was killed in action 4/24/1944.
He was born in Holderness 12/16/1919 to Henry and Carrie Hardy.
He entered the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1942.
He was a top turret gunner and aerial engineer on a B-17 bomber.
He has a brother, Richard Hardy, also in the U.S. Army in Europe.
KENNESON, WAYNE E., age 19, was killed in action
12.11.1944. He was the son of Guy
A. Kenneson of Rumney and was born there on 1/4/1925.
He was wounded in France on July 18th and evacuated to Great
Britain by plane. He left the
hospital August 12th to rejoin his old outfit in France.
His brother, Private Russell F. Kenneson is missing in action.
HILL, FLORENCE I. (GILMAN) died 5/6/1944.
Born 2/4/1914 in Plymouth to Leonard Gilman and Blanche Pratt, she
married Arthur J. Hill 9/14/1932. Burial
in Riverside Cemetery.
LEVERETT, MISS CAROLINE RUTH died 4/26/1944 at the age
of 90. She was born 9/30/1853 to
William Leverett and Catherine Russell Spaulding.

MC CARTHY, HONORA (BRADLEY) died 5/3/1944.
She was born in County Cork, Ireland 7/10/1867, the daughter of Daniel
Bradley. She married Felix McCarthy
11/16/1890 in Macroom, Ireland. She
was a pioneer Roman Catholic in Plymouth, before the Catholic Church was
established in this town. Four
sons; Felix, Jr., Daniel, Charles, and Thomas.
A daughter, Mrs. Edward Parent. Burial
in Riverside Cemetery.
MITCHELL, CARL L., age 24, son of Carl L. and Daisy
Mitchell was killed in action in Italy on 9/10/1944. Known to his friends as “Bun” he was born 5/30/1920 in
Ashland. He was employed prior to
his military service at the Parker-Young Company at Livermore Falls.
NUTTING, BENJAMIN FRANKLIN, the son of Thomas Edwin
Nutting, died 9/3/1944. He was born
11/22/1854, the second of six children. He
married Isabelle Marston of Kittery Maine in 1884.
He was the proprietor of a book and stationery store in Sacramento,
California prior to his death.
TROW, HATTIE GRACE died 12/5/1944.
She was born 7/11/1857 to William and Sophia (Penniman) Harriman.
Hattie was the widow of Rev. Joseph H. Trow.
She was a weather recorder for Plymouth for nearly 40 years. She had one son, Henry G.
She also leaves three sisters; Mrs. Alma Whittemore, Mrs. Emily Davis,
and Mrs. Elizabeth Fuller. Burial
was in Riverside Cemetery.
WALLACE, GEORGE B. MC CLELLAN died 8/3/1944.
He was the son of William Wallace and Nancy Smith.
On 11/7/1864 he was born in Holderness.
He was a carpenter and also operated a filling station on Ward Hill.
He is buried in Pleasant View Cemetery in West Plymouth.

CURRIER, DEAN S.., was born in lower Intervale 3/18/1861
to David and Laura (Reed) Currier. He
married Emma C. Tenney of Hanover 1/1/1995 and they had four daughters.
He died 5/20/1949.
MOULTON, EMMA ABRA (LEWIS), was born in Hebron 8/27/1865
to Calvin and Angelina (Merrill) Lewis. She
was married to Charles A. Moulton, a sawyer from Holderness, on 5/2/1886.
He died in 1939. They were
the parents of eight children. She
died in Plymouth 6/10/1949.
