1860 TO 1869 OBITUARIES

 

(1860)

 

BARNARD, JAMES, son of Isaac Barnard and Dolly Greenough, died in 1860. 

 

BARNARD, ELIZABETH, daughter of Isaac and Dolly (Greenough) Barnard, died in Plymouth on 4/25/1860.  She was married to someone with the surname of Sanborn.

 

BARNARD, MARY, daughter of Isaac and Dolly (Greenough) Barnard, died unmarried on 5/15/1860.  She made her home with her brother, George Washington Barnard, who died in 1858.  They both lived on the paternal homestead until their deaths.

 

CLARK, THOMAS, died of lung congestion on 10/7/1860.  He was born in Acworth, 2/9/1791, the son of Thomas  Clark and Jean Alexander.  On 6/27/1819, he married Sally Meloon in Wendell (now Sunapee).  She died in 1829, shortly after giving birth to her fifth child.  Thomas married second, Margaret Currier on 8/30/1829, just a few months after the death of Sally.  Margaret and Thomas had eight children together.  He was a successful merchant and innkeeper in West Andover for about 20 years before moving to Plymouth in 1840.  He was a magistrate in Andover and in Plymouth.  He was a Plymouth Selectman in 1843 and 1844.  His last five children were born in Plymouth; all the others were born in Andover.

 

EASTMAN, GALEN F., died at the age of 64 on 8/5/1860.  He is buried in Lower Intervale Cemetery.

 

HEATH, LYDIA CRAWFORD (MITCHELL), wife of William L. Heath, died 7/30/1860 of liver disease. She was the widow of William Crawford when she married Mr. Heath on 4/9/1840.  They had two sons, Cyrus Warren Heath and Silas Wright Heath.  She was born in Bridgewater on 9/4/1799, the daughter of Charles and Margaret (Morse) Mitchell.  She married William Crawford 1/25/1816. He died in Gainsville, Alabama while on a trip, 8/27/1837.  They were the parents of nine children.

 

KIDDER, SARAH (POWELL), the first wife of Reuben Kidder, died of lung fever on 3/5/1860.  She was born 3/3/1800 and married Reuben on 11/6/1823.  She was the mother of four children.

 

MARSH, EMMA GRACE, infant daughter of Gilman Marsh and Hannah Greenough, died of tuberculosis at the age of 15 months.  Her death occurred on 9/14/1860.  She was the third child born to Gil and Hannah.

 

MILLER, MIRIAM (WEBSTER), the second wife of James Miller, died at age 62 on 11/21/1860.

 

PEBBLES, SARAH (SLOPER), the wife of James Pebbles, Jr., died 12/1/1860.

 

PHILLIPS, DOROTHY (CLIFFORD), the widow of Noah Phillips, died at the age of 81 on 5/10/1860. Dorothy was from Dorchester, and Noah was the son of Noah Phillips, Sr.  Dorothy and Noah had one child, also named Dorothy, who became the first wife of Walter Melvin.

 

STRAW, DUDLEY, died of heart disease 7/18/1860.  He was born in 1786 in Barnstead.  He married Mary Avery and they lived in Campton for several years.  After 1840 they moved to Plymouth, where he farmed.  They were the parents of 15 children.

 

WILLOUGHBY, JONAS, died of strangulation on 3/8/1860.  On 3/15/1790, he was born in Hollis, the son of Jonas Willoughby and Prudence Saunders.  He married Hepsibah Gardner in Woburn, Massachusetts on 4/24/1815.They were the parents of four children, one of whom died young.

 

 

 

 

 

 

(1861)

 

BLAKE, CLARA, daughter of John W. Blake and Louisa G. Melvin, died at the age of 18 on 8/7/1861.  She was the granddaughter of William Blake.

 

STAFFORD, ISAAC, died of lung fever at the age of 82 on 4/27/1861.  He was born 10/31/1778, the son of Abraham Stafford and Martha Dennis.  He was one of 11 children born to them.  Isaac married Eunice Ward on 3/28/1805, she being a daughter of the Rev. Nathan Ward, Congregational Minister in Plymouth.  Isaac was a farmer and a cabinet-maker and lived on Ward Hill, where he built a lovely home for his family.  He and Eunice were the parents of eight children.

 

WARD, BENJAMIN, died 9/17/1861 of dysentery. He was the son of Enoch Ward and Lydia Church.  He was born 3/17/1789.  On 3/18/1819 he married Deborah Church of Campton.  Benjamin was a painter.  He and Deborah had three children.

 

WORTHEN, EPHRAIM, died of tuberculosis 10/9/1861.  He was born in Candia on 3/14/1810, the son of Stephen Worthen.  He married Sarah Grace Lovejoy on 12/25/1833 and they moved to Plymouth in 1837, living near Currier Hill, where he farmed.  They had 11 children.

 

(1862)

 

BLODGETT, ESTHER W., daughter of Noah Blodgett and Esther White Packard, died at the age of 19 on 11/20/1862.

 

BURNS, PAULINE HENRIETTA, the wife of Samuel A. Burns, died 11/9/1862 of heart disease.  She was born in France and was the mother of Sam’s four children; Jules, George, Pauline, and Louise.

 

CORLISS, JANE (CURRIER), the first wife of Kimball Corliss, died 1/5/1862 of tuberculosis.  She was the mother of his first four children.  She was the daughter of Moses Currier.

 

MERRILL, CARRIE ETTA, fourteen year old daughter of Hiram Wesley Merrill and his second wife, Mary Emeline Foster, died of convulsions on 4/25/1862.  She was the fourth of five children born to the Merrills.

 

PENNIMAN, MARTHA ELLEN, infant daughter of Charles Dustin Penniman and Ellen Judith Chandler, died at the age of one year on 6/5/1862.

 

POWERS, LUCIUS D., the son of Rueben Powers and Jemima Blodgett, died in a railroad accident at the age of 27 on 5/5/1862.

 

STEARNS, JAMES, died of lung fever on 4/17/1862.  He was born 3/1/1804, the son of Aaron Stearns  and his first wife, Clarissa George.  James married Roxanna Bayley on 5/1/1830 and they were the parents of three children, the youngest, Lucia, who died at three years old. 

 

WEBSTER, DAVID CLOUGH, died 3/28/1862 of tuberculosis.  He was the son of William Webster and was born 2/20/1804.  He was a prosperous farmer in Plymouth.  He was a Selectman, a Major in the militia, and a Deacon of the Congregational Church.  He married Nancy Farwell Gordon on 6/14/1827 and they were the parents of four children.

 

WORTHEN, ELIZA J. (GOVE), the first wife of George Wesley Worthen, died 11/2/1862 of tuberculosis. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

(1863)

 

CURRIER, DANA CHAPIN, two-year old son of Henry Clay Currier and his wife, Florina Blaisdell, died 11/12/1863.  He is buried in Lower Intervale Cemetery.

 

CURRIER, an unnamed infant of Henry Clay Currier and Florina Blaisdell, died 11/11/1863, the year of its birth.  This infant is buried in Lower Intervale Cemetery.

 

DRAKE, ELLEN MARIA, 14 year old daughter of John Ayer Drake and Emeline D. Pike, died 10/7/1863. There is some confusion about her name; in one record she is called Ellen Maria, in another she is called Nellie W.

 

MORSE, WILLIAM, died 2/2/1863 at the age of 80.  He was married to Ruth Homans.

 

PEBBLES, ALMEDA (ANDRUSS), the first wife of Alba John Pebbles, died at the age of 48 on 10/18/1863.

 

PENNIMAN, JUSTUS BALDWIN, son of Caleb Dustin Penniman  and Clarissa Chesley, died on 6/16/1863 at New Orleans, during the Civil War. He is buried in the Turnpike Cemetery.

 

(1864)

 

CUMMINGA, ELIZABETH (CONNOR), the wife of Noah Cumming, died at the age of 80 on 1/5/1864.  She was known as “Betsey.”

 

FERRIN, NELSON E., the infant son of Edward E. Ferrin and Asenath P. Emery, died 10/21/1864 at seven weeks, two days old.

 

FLETCHER,M HERMAN MORRILL, three year old son of Samuel Prescott Fletcher and Lydia A. Morrill, died 2/17/1864.

 

WHEELER, RHODA, youngest child of William Nevins Wheeler and his first wife, Hannah Odell, died unmarried in Amherst on 8/3/1864.  She is buried in Lower Intervale Cemetery. She was 48 years old.

 

(1865)

 

BLAKE, MARY EMELINE, daughter of John W. Blake and Louisa G. Melvin, died 2/16/1865 at the age of 23. She was the granddaughter of William Blake and his second wife, Nancy Gove.

 

BLODGETT, ESTHER WHITE (PACKARD), the wife of Noah Blodgett, died at the age of 56 on 3/3/1865.

 

MORSE, RUTH (WHITCHER), the second wife of Samuel Morse, son of Samuel Morse, died at the age of 62 on 3/16/1865.

 

MORSE, STEPHEN, died at age 85, 11/26/1865.  He was married to Sarah Chamberlain, also called Sally. Burial was in Turnpike Cemetery.

 

PERKINS, JACOB, was born in Ipswich, Massachusetts on 6/24/1775.  In 1805 he married Thirza Dearborn, daughter of Samuel.  She died 5/10/1811, one month to the day after giving birth to her fourth child, Thirza Dearborn Perkins.  His second wife was Dolly Lancaster; they wed 10/17/1813.  She helped him raise his children by his first marriage and together they had four children of their own.  Jacob was a farmer and in 1844 he moved from Hebron to Plymouth, where he died on his 90th birthday, 6/24/1865.  All eight of his children were born in Hebron.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

(1866)

 

BINFORD, SAMUEL, died 4/30/1866 at the age of 43.  He was married to Floretta Rose Adams, the daughter of Moses Adams.  He is buried in the Turnpike Cemetery.

 

EMERSON, DANIEL, widower of Lucy Blake Emerson, died 6/11/1866.  He was the son of Judge Samuel Emerson and Mary Little.  Daniel was the youngest of 11 children born to Samuel and Mary.  He was born 5/27/1787 in Plymouth. He was a farmer, living in the Lower Intervale section of Plymouth.

 

FERRIN, ASENATH P. (EMERY), first wife of Edward Ela Ferrin, died at age 36 on 4/10/1866.

 

MERRILL, DAVID, son of Jacob Merrill, died 2/26/1866.  He was born 4/10/1801.  He owned a sawmill on the road to Beech Hill.  He was the father of ten children.

 

(1867)

DRAPER, JENNIE MAY, young daughter of Nathaniel Fletcher Draper and Emma Bridgeman, died in Montreal on 8/27, 1867, at the age of four.

 

FRENCH, JOSIAH QUINCY, died 8/30/1867 at the age of 35.  He was the son of Captain Jonathan French.

 

MELVIN, SARAH (ROWE), the wife of Nathaniel Peabody Melvin, died 6/1/1867.

 

MELVIN, DOROTHY (PHILLIPS), daughter of Noah Phillips and Dorothy Clifford, and the first wife of Walter Melvin, died 4/14/1867 at the age of 63.

 

(1868)

 

 

BARTLETT, MARY (RAMSAY), died at the age of 82 on 1/20/1868.

 

ROBIE, MIRIAM, second wife of Ichabod Robie, died 5/28/1868 at the age of 83.

 

 

(1869)

 

BLODGETT, MOSES, died at the age of 66 on 3/5/1869.

 

CLAY. An unnamed infant son of Jonathan L. Clay and Mary Ann Gilman, died at the age of two months on 4/7/1860.
